Step Safe HD
Step Safe Heavy Duty is a flexible, pre-mixed anti-slip coating for concrete driveways, footpaths, pool surrounds and patios, for commercial and residential work.
Features
- P5 anti-slip rating
- Premium acrylic resin: flexible, crack resistant and fade-proof
- Anti-mold additives keep surfaces looking fresh longer
- Can be tinted to almost any color, with an optional contrasting fleck coat
- For concrete at least 28 days old; commercial and residential use
- 7-year manufacturing warranty covering flaking, peeling and cracking under normal use and conditions
What P5 means in the US: P5 is a classification under Australian Standard AS 4586 (wet pendulum test). It is not a US rating. US specifiers usually reference ANSI A326.3 DCOF or other ASTM-based testing, and a P5 rating alone does not establish ADA or OSHA compliance. [Ask Shieldcoat USA for US DCOF test data]

The complete system
Step Safe HD performs as part of a full system, from the manufacturer's detailed application guide. Humidity affects drying and recoat times, so check conditions before you start.
- Repair
Fix cracks and imperfections with Slab Repair. Grinding is optional but recommended for a smoother finish.
- Etch (if needed)
Mix 1 part muriatic (hydrochloric) acid with 4 parts water and apply at 215–322 ft² per pail, working it in with a stiff broom. Leave 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Make sure the discharge meets local regulations, and repeat if needed.
- Neutralize
Apply 1 part baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to 20 parts water and leave at least 20 minutes.
- Pressure wash
Clean at 3,000 psi or more, then let dry at least 24 hours.
- Prime
Apply a generous coat of Step Safe WB Primer. A powdery surface may need a bonding or densifying agent first.
- Coat
Two coats of Step Safe HD by hopper gun.
- Fleck (optional)
Spray contrasting color flecks with Step Safe Heavy Duty Fleck Coat.
- Seal
Finish with 1–2 coats of Step Safe WB Sealer, spray applied.
Maintenance
Soft wash periodically, and apply a clear coat of Concreshield Clear every 4 years to preserve the surface's appearance and extend its life.
